When packing carry-on luggage, the most important thing to remember is that your carry on luggage will have to go through security with you. You want the carry on luggage to be packed neatly in case security decides to search your bag. If the bag is overstuffed, it not only makes it more difficult to store on board the plane, but it will make it more difficult for security. If they go through your carry on luggage, you will need to repack it quickly. When the bag is too overstuffed, it makes repacking your carry-on luggage more difficult. The use of packing cubes is always a good idea. TSA security will be able to go through the bag quickly, and your re-packing will be easier and more convenient. The cubes are ideal for socks, underwear, pajamas, stockings, etc. Remember, too, if the carry on luggage is too heavy or too over-packed, you may not be able to store it in the overhead compartment. Additionally, you can only carry liquids and gels that are in bottles or jars of three ounces or less and they must fit inside the one- quart clear plastic bag. This is the 3-1-1 bag that you always hear referred to at the airports. You can also carry only one 3-1-1 bag per person. You can and should check with your individual airline carrier to be sure that your carry on luggage fits their requirements. Most of the domestic airlines ask for 45″ linear size carry on luggage. This is the total dimension of length, plus height, plus width. Many of the styles of expandable carry-on luggage can be overstuffed to exceed this amount. If the flight is overbooked or crowded, the airline may reject your carry on luggage. So pack neatly and intelligently. Do not pack a small Swiss Army knife, or any of the other items on the TSA list of items not permitted on board. Don’t overstuff the carry on bag, don’t make it too heavy, and don’t try to carry on more liquids than is permitted and you’ll have smooth traveling!
